(ASHEVILLE, NC) – When there’s a job to get done and you’re closing in on the finishing touches, fatigue is not an option. If you want proof, just ask Citadel guard Tyler Moffe.
The graduate point guard tallied 22 points and four assists while playing all 45 minutes as the 9th seeded Bulldogs knocked off ETSU 84-76 in overtime in the first round of the 2022 Ingles Southern Conference Men’s Basketball Championship at Harrah’s Cherokee Center – Asheville.
“I’m a little tired right now but honestly, I feel good,” said Moffe.
In a back and forth game that saw nine lead changes, it was the Bucs with the best chance to win in regulation. After David Maynard of Citadel tied the game 69-69 with 13 seconds remaining, ETSU took a timeout to set up a play for the win. But Ty Brewer’s three point attempt at the buzzer was off the mark, sending the game to overtime.
“I was thankful that he (Maynard) made those free throws,” Citadel coach Duggar Baucom said. “I thought our guys did a great job of guarding them. They called a time out and had a set play and we had to sit down and guard for 13 seconds. We had to all switch our defensive coverage and the guys just talked it through.”
The Bulldogs scored the first six points in the extra period and never looked back. Citadel rode another double-double from graduate forward Hayden Brown who finished with 27 points and 17 rebounds of his own in 43 minutes of action.
“We executed in the overtime period,” Baucomm said. “Most of everything had to do with these two (Brown and Moffe). Everything kind of revolves around them and as they go, the team goes. They were both spectacular tonight.”
The Bucs were led by David Sloan with 17 points. Citadel plays top-seeded Chattanooga in the second round at noon on Saturday.
