The 2022 Michigan gubernatorial election will take place on November 8, 2022, to elect the Governor of Michigan. Incumbent Democratic Governor Gretchen Whitmer is running for re-election to a second term.
There are nine Republicans vying for this position to run against Mrs. Whitmer. The numbers will narrow down to one or two central Republican candidates as we near the election deadline in over a year. However, I like this pick, Former Detroit Police Chief James Craig. I like too, that he is coming out of Detroit.
Candidate Craig has publicly storied his journey from born Democrat to a slow, yet progressive process to Republican, known to battle with the likes of Rep Maxine Waters, post the Rodney King riots in L.A., in his earlier days when serving with the L.A. Police Department. Craig openly fights the mentality of what he calls is ‘victimhood’ being promoted by the Democratic Party.
However, my only concern is that Mr. Craig is a huge advocate for gun control, which makes sense as a former-police chief coming from Detroit. However, Michiganders like their legal guns, especially on the outskirts of Detroit, in rural areas and the Upper Peninsula, so I don’t know if guns are of a greater priority to Michigan Republican voters over ousting Whitmer, in regards to this heavily qualified candidate former-police chief.
Gun control or Whitmer, which one is worse?
I am originally from Ohio and I know the two states faired far differently over COVID, due in part to our governors. Governor Mike DeWine did a stellar job for Ohio, in my opinion.
RYAN KELLEY. In addition, I wouldn’t be so quick to discredit candidate Ryan Kelley. Although, he has his January 6 baggage (which could disqualify him), there is an appetite for his kind of behavior in Michigan right now.
Also, Ryan Kelley is the Allendale Township Planning commissioner and what’s even more important to note here is, Mr. Kelley spearheaded the organization of the right-wing opposition to Gov. Gretchen Whitmer and his foundation had ties to those arrested for allegedly plotting to kill Whitmer (but they could not prove direct ties).
However, a good majority of those who attended the rally portion of January 6 and not the Capitol portion were midwesterners. And they still truly believe the election was stolen…even today. So I would not be surprised if he draws some strength & steam in the coming days and months.
Especially, as many of those who are still being held for January 6 in DC jails are being bailed & finally sentenced. QAnon Shaman is being sentenced within a week or two. Kelley has a chance to re-engage, reignite and (non-violently) rally his followers and support base, within the next year and that, if done correctly could be seen as a redeeming quality, post January 6, that could make him someone to keep an eye on.
In addition, even if he gets disqualified for his 6 Jan involvement, I do not look for him to be going anywhere, anytime soon.
